Call for Nomination of Candidates for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Board
The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (the Minister) hereby invites interested parties to nominate candidates for appointment to the board of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), which is being reconstituted in terms of the Scientific Research Council Act, 1988 (Act No. 46 of 1988) (the Act).
The objectives of the CSIR are, through directed and particularly multidisciplinary research and technological innovation, to foster, in the national interest and in fields which in its opinion should receive preference, industrial and scientific development, either by itself or in cooperation with principals from the private or public sectors, and thereby to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of the people of South Africa; and to perform any other functions that may be assigned to the CSIR by or under the Act.
In terms of the Act, the affairs of the CSIR are managed by a board consisting of –
- a chairperson, appointed by the Minister;
- no fewer than five but no more than nine other members, appointed by the Minister; and
- the chief executive officer, who will serve on the Board by virtue of his or her office.
The members of the board, including the chairperson, will serve on a part-time basis for a maximum of four years and must be South African citizens or permanent residents. They must all have achieved distinction in science or industry, or have special knowledge or experience in relation to some aspect of the CSIR's functions. At least one member must have financial knowledge. The board as a whole should be broadly representative of South Africa's demographics.
Nominations should be submitted to the Minister by no later than 31 August 2026. Please email nominations to Boardappointment7@dsti.gov.za, accompanied by a copy of the candidate's identity document and curriculum vitae, including the following information: Full names, gender, race, current designation and responsibilities, contact details (postal and email addresses, and cellphone and landline numbers), qualifications, current and past service on boards, areas of expertise, and the names and contact details of at least two referees.
Confirmation of the nominee's availability is also required.
NB: Nominations will not be considered unless all the requirements set out above are met. Correspondence will be entered into with shortlisted candidates only.
