Government Messages 13 July 2026: Social Cohesion Month
South Africa marks Social Cohesion Month annually in July to reaffirm that the country's greatest strength lies in its rich diversity, where cultures, languages, traditions and beliefs are united within one democratic nation.
Since the democratic transition in 1994, South Africans from different religious, cultural and backgrounds have lived together peacefully, demonstrating that the country belongs to its citizens, regardless of race, ethnicity, culture or religion.
Social cohesion is the bond that unites people, strengthens relationships, and fosters a shared sense of belonging, solidarity, and mutual respect within society.
The observance of Social Cohesion Month alongside Nelson Mandela Month is deeply symbolic.
While Madiba's leadership laid the foundation for democracy, lasting social cohesion requires a continued national commitment to overcoming historical divisions and ensuring that every person enjoys the dignity, equality and opportunities.
Let us work together to build a cohesive nation. Advancing social cohesion requires every citizen to actively reject the barriers of race, ethnicity, and culture. #GovZAUpdates
