Call for applications: 2026 South African Women in Science Awards

The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) has opened the call for applications for the 2026 South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA). Now marking its 20th anniversary, SAWiSA honours, celebrates and highlights the outstanding contributions of women researchers and scientists driving progress across science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and innovation in South Africa.
Since its inception in 2006, SAWiSA has played a pivotal role in transforming the national research landscape. The awards have consistently encouraged women to break through glass ceilings and excel in scientific fields. By recognising excellence in research, mentorship and innovation, SAWiSA has helped cultivate a more inclusive and dynamic scientific ecosystem that inspires young girls and women to pursue and sustain careers in STEM.
The 2026 theme, "Placing women at the centre of science, technology and innovation", highlights that advancing gender equality in science, is essential to the Department achieving its broader objectives of integrating science, technology and innovation at the core of every sector – government, education, industry and society.
The awards are made to Distinguished Women Researchers and Distinguished Young Women Researchers in the categories of the Humanities and Social Sciences, the Natural (Life and Physical) and Engineering Sciences, Public Engagement with Science, and any field aligned with this year's special category "Innovation for Impact: Women Leading Change".
DSTI Fellowship Awards will also be made to registered master's and PhD students.
Apply here. The deadline for applications is 31 May 2026.
