20 years of democracy and freedom: The changing landscape of women’s participation in science and technology education, training, and employment

The Department of Science and Technology is calling for nominations to recognise and reward excellence by women scientists and researchers.  The South African Women in Science Awards encourage and reward women scientists and researchers, and also profile them as role models for younger women.  The awards will be made to women who are South African citizens or permanent residents.

The theme for the 2014 South African Women in Science Awards is “20 years of democracy and freedom: The changing landscape of women’s participation in science and technology education, training, and employment*”.***This theme is informed by the 2014 United Nations Commission on the Status of Women; and the fact that South Africa iscelebrating its 20 years of democracy.

The 2014 Women in Science Awards will be presented on 15 August 2014, as part of the Department's celebration of National Women's Month, and in celebrating 20 years of democracy and freedom, the pre- and post-awards activities will also celebrate and recognise past WISA winners.

The categories for the 2014 South African Women in Science Awards are as follows:

1.    Awards for Distinguished Women Researchers

·         Physical and Engineering Sciences

·         Social Sciences and Humanities

2. Awards for Distinguished Young Women Researchers

·         Physical and Engineering Sciences

·         Social Sciences and Humanities

3.    Fellowships

·         Master’s students: three in any discipline, and two in Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS)

·         Doctoral students: three in any discipline, and two in IKS

4.    TATA Africa Scholarships for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology

·         Master’s students (X3)

·         Doctoral students (X3)

NOTE:

Winners may be requested to participate in public awareness initiatives led by the DST.

Please be aware that if you are selected as a finalist you will also be requested to submit a short profile and 3 high resolution photographs for publicity material.

NOMINATION PROCEDURE

Nominations on the attached form should reach the Department of Science and Technology by 30 May 2014.  No late entries will be accepted.

Nomination forms should indicate clearly in which category the nomination is being made, and should be accompanied by the documentation specified for each category.  In this regard, a checklist of all documents required is attached at the end of this call document. Please complete the checklist in order to ensure that you have met the compliance requirements.
