In a landmark announcement that promises to transform South Africa's scientific landscape, the President has unveiled a comprehensive R10 billion investment plan aimed at upgrading research facilities and infrastructure across the nation.

This significant investment forms a crucial part of the National Development Plan and is expected to position South Africa as a leading destination for scientific research and technological innovation on the African continent.

Key Investment Areas

The funding will be allocated across several critical areas:

  • Research Laboratories: R4 billion for upgrading existing laboratories and constructing new state-of-the-art facilities
  • Digital Infrastructure: R2.5 billion for high-speed connectivity and computing resources
  • Human Capital Development: R2 billion for scholarships, training programs, and researcher support
  • Equipment and Technology: R1.5 billion for cutting-edge research equipment

Expected Impact

The investment is expected to create over 10,000 jobs in the science and technology sector over the next five years, while also attracting international researchers and fostering local talent development.
