The Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom will deliver a keynote address at the opening of the 3rd South African Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies Summer School which will be hosted by the University of Western Cape (UWC) from 24 to 29 November 2013. The opening ceremony takes place on 24 November from 17:00 at the UWC’s Life Sciences Building.

The vision of the South African Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies Summer School is to create a pool of nanoscientists sufficiently trained to conduct nanoscience and nanotechnology RDI activities.

About 120 Masters and PhD students from all the country are expected to attend the week long programme which is meant to equip students at Masters and PhD level with a basic knowledge of nanosciences and nanotechnologies as a way of preparing them to pursue research in this field.  It complements existing human capital development programmes in nanotechnology, most of which are pitched at a research level.

The theme for the 2013 school is “Nanotechnology: impact on water treatment and the environment”. A number of theme related seminars have also been organised.  These will take place in the evenings. The first seminar, scheduled for Monday, will focus on water quality and sanitation in SA, outlining challenges, existing technologies and best practices globally. The discussions are meant to give students an indication of the extent of the challenges faced by the country in water management.

All seminars are open to the media and the public.
