The Minister of Science and Technology, Mr Derek Hanekom, will deliver the opening address at the policy dialogue hosted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the European Union (EU), in partnership with the Human Sciences Research Council, on 12 February 2013, at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) International Convention Centre.

Themed "Extending access and connectivity across rural communities in South Africa", the policy dialogue will bring together local and international policy makers, social scientists and researchers, giving them a platform to discuss research results and the implications that research has for policy development and implementation.

The dialogue is part of a series of EU-funded Sector Budget Support policy dialogues under the Innovation for Poverty Alleviation Programme of the DST. Discussions will explore various information and communication technology projects developed for rural areas, including the wireless mesh network technology demonstrator project implemented by the CSIR's Meraka Institute. This technology demonstrator project has successfully implemented the wireless mesh network technology in over 200 government facilities.

Issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
