Bilateral talks strengthen scientific relations between SA and Germany
The Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, will hold bilateral talks with Dr Annette Schavan, Federal Minister of Education and Research of the Republic of Germany, on 5 February 2013.
Dr Schavan is in the country from 4 to 8 February. Her visit reflects the broadening and deepening of the science and technology relations between the two countries, which both consider of strategic importance.
South Africa and Germany signed a science and technology cooperation agreement in 1996, and have supported research and development projects in agricultural sciences, life sciences, earth sciences, mathematical sciences, engineering, physical sciences and health sciences. To date, more than 400 research and development projects have been funded at research institutions and universities, and with industrial partners. Funds spent on these projects exceed R80 million.
To celebrate the success of their 16-year collaboration, the two countries are holding the German-South African Year of Science 2012/2013, with events that include exhibitions, seminars and workshops on priority areas. The theme of the year of science is "Enhancing science partnerships for innovation and sustainable development". The closing session will be in Germany on 15 and 16 April 2013.
During the Year of Science, 41 initiatives were selected to be funded under the year of science, including initiatives in human capital development, health innovation, climate site2016, bioeconomy and astronomy. Minister Schavan will get an opportunity to visit some of the project sites during her week in South Africa.
