
Deputy Minister Gina leads Freedom Month engagement on democracy and science

Members of the media are invited to a community engagement in Mbazwana, KwaZulu-Natal on Friday, 24 April, commemorating the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s Constitution, highlighting the role of democracy in advancing science, technology and innovation.
The Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina, will address the event, which forms part of Freedom Month commemorations in South Africa, and reflects on the country’s democratic journey, scientific progress since 1996, and the importance of inclusive development.
This event will provide the platform for the local community to reflect on the country’s democratic gains, public participation, and how science and innovation contribute to improved quality of life.
The engagement will bring together various institutions, including the Human Sciences Research Council, the entity of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI). There will be also be exhibitions and presentations from the DSTI and the departments of Home Affairs, Justice and Constitutional Development, Social Development and the South African Police Service. The Independent Electoral Commission will also be there to promote voter education.
