Minister Nzimande hosts learners at a Pre-SONA science outreach programme at the NRF - South African Astronomical Observatory

Earlier today, in support of SONA 2026 and the apex priorities of government, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande hosted learners from Fezeka High in Gugulethu and Siyabulela Primary in Langa, at the NRF-South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Cape Town.
This Programme forms part of Minister Nzimande's Science Outreach Programme and supports the Department of Basic Education's mission to improve the quality of mathematics and science teaching in schools.
As part of the day's activities the learners undertook a tour of the NRF-SAAO visitor's centre, the McClean Telescope and Dome.
The learners were also exposed to exhibitions by various science entities that were designed to encourage learners, especially young women, to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
In his message, Minister Nzimande reminded the learners that "All the wonderful work that is being done at this, and other public science facilities, is in part aimed at creating opportunities for you to realise your dreams. We also expect you to never forget that there was once a time in our country when black people were prevented by law, from studying science and it took the sacrifices of your parents and grandparents for things to change."
Minister Nzimande further urged the learners "to be respectful towards your parents, educators, fellow learners, your communities and most importantly, we expect you to respect yourselves."
