Deputy Minister Gina to participate in African Green Hydrogen Summit 2025
The Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina, will participate in the G20-aligned 2025 African Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town on 12 and 13 June.
Hosted by the Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE), the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) will showcase its expertise and contributions to the green hydrogen value chain at the summit.
Through DSTI initiatives, such as the Hydrogen South Africa (HySA) Centres of Competence (CoCs), South Africa continues to develop expertise to support the production of low-emission hydrogen. The HySA programme is growing its portfolio of intellectual property (IP), technologies, and know-how across the hydrogen value chain. For example, the HySA Infrastructure CoC, in collaboration with Sasol is developing a 2kM electrolyser for green hydrogen production as part of the green strategy to decarbonise Sasol. This opportunity serves as a testing and validation platform for HySA intellectual property rights for industrial applications.
Deputy Minister Gina will lead the Department's high-level panel discussion titled "Banking on African hydrogen: Advancing locally developed hydrogen technology IP for continental growth". This session will explore how to unlock the commercial potential of home-grown African hydrogen technologies. It will bring together experts from the research, industry, government, and finance spheres to co-create pathways for taking innovations from the lab to market, focusing on offtake readiness, public-private co-investment, and market access strategies.
*Among the experts will be Professor Ken-Ichi Aika of Green Ammonia Research Centre, National Institute of Japan, Ms Mpumi Mpofu, Chief Executive Officer: Airports, Company of South Africa, Ms Fahmida Smith, Principal Market Development at Anglo American and Dr Titus Mathe, Chief Executive Officer at the South African National Energy Development Institute*.
The Deputy Minister will also lead a networking session on the sidelines of the summit to highlight the work of the HySA CoCs in supporting the development of the hydrogen economy. High-level dignitaries are expected to attend this session.
Dr Gina will also speak at an event of the Women in Green Hydrogen (WiGH) initiative, at which the Green Hydrogen Skills Programme will be launched. The WiGH is a global network dedicated to promoting gender diversity and inclusion within the green hydrogen sector.
