The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, through its entity, the National Intellectual Property Management Office, invites members of the media to cover its World Intellectual Property (IP) Day 2025 celebration.

The event is a partnership with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, the Technology Innovation Agency, the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission, the Small Enterprise Development Agency, and Mangosuthu University of Technology.

Beyond its power to entertain and inspire, music is a major economic driver that contributes significantly to global GDP and job creation. As such, protecting music copyright is not only a cultural imperative but also a valuable economic asset.

This year's celebration, themed "Intellectual property and music – feel the beat", calls on us to explore the critical role of IP rights and innovation policies in empowering creators, innovators and entrepreneurs in the music industry. The event will highlight the contributions of songwriters, composers, performers and all those who shape the music that moves us.

World IP Day is observed globally each year to raise awareness about the impact of IP –

patents, copyrights, trademarks, and designs – on our daily lives. The 2025 edition aims to deepen the public's understanding of how IP fosters a thriving, inclusive music ecosystem that benefits creators and consumers alike.

The celebration will bring together stakeholders from government, academia, the creative industries, and the private sector to engage on issues that affect the sustainability and protection of music as IP.

Join us as we unite to support innovation, celebrate creativity and amplify the value of IP in shaping the future of the music industry.

The media are invited to attend as follows:
Date:              Friday, 25 April 2025

Time:              08:00

Venue:            Student Centre, Mangosuthu University of Technology, Durban

Issued by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation.
