The annual scientific excellence celebration will take place on 11 July 2024 when the red carpet is rolled out for the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF)-South32 Awards.

Also referred to as the "Science Oscars" of South Africa, the awards recognise achievements in science, engineering, technology (SET) and innovation in the country.

The event, supported by the Department of Science and Innovation, will take place simultaneously in Cape Town and Johannesburg on Thursday evening, under the theme "The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in South Africa". The NSTF recognises the many benefits of the 4IR, while acknowledging that its social ramifications may not always be good.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande, as the patron of the NSTF-South32 Awards, will deliver the keynote address at the hybrid event.

In line with the 2024 theme, the NSTF will make a special award this year for an outstanding contribution to innovation in 4IR technologies in South Africa.

The awards will showcase the country's excellence in artificial intelligence, machine learning and big data analytics, among others, in the quest to make the world a better place through innovation.

Young people who excelled in physical science and mathematics in the 2023 National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) examinations under the NSTF Brilliants Programme will also be recognised at the ceremony. Twenty students who have enrolled for studies in SET-related courses at universities will be recognised.

The DSI and the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions are the current sponsors of the NSTF Brilliants Programme, which is 24 this year.
