DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND INNOVATION TO LAUNCH SCIENCE CENTRE AND WATER, FOOD AND ENERGY PROJECT IN LIMPOPO
Learners in and around Makhado, Limpopo, will no longer have to travel long distances to access science laboratories, as the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) will unveil a fully fitted science laboratory at Hlanganani ka Bungeni on Friday, 5 April.
Built at Russel Bungeni High School in the village, the laboratory is part of the DSI's Special Ministerial Community Projects programme, which aims to bring scientific developments to rural villages.
The much-needed science lab will assist the learners in the surrounding villages to do experiments. Grade 10 to 12 learners currently travel to Vuwani for compulsory science experiments, which is costly.
The lab will also enable learners from Grades 8 and 9 to be introduced to science experiments much earlier in their school career.
The media is invited to join a tour of the science lab, thereafter, the launch of the Masia Village Water-Energy-Food Nexus Project at the Masia Multipurpose Centre, which is about 25km away.
The unique project has equipped the centre with a solar energy system, water supply, and fruit and vegetable growing shades. Interns have begun their training on agricultural production at the centre and the first sweet potato crops were grown and harvested in 2023. The planting of the first fruit nursery seeds and vegetable varieties began in December 2023 and is ongoing.
