The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande will open the Science Forum South Africa (SFSA) 2023 edition tomorrow, Wednesday, 6 December at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research International Convention Centre (CSIR ICC).

This year’s programme will feature a panel discussion on the Africa Union Decade for African Roots and Diaspora: Role of the diaspora in supporting African science and innovation. In addition, the programme will showcase the SFSA Science Diplomacy Awards and the World Scienc Forum legacy as South Africa prepares to host the 2025 World Conference of Science Journalists.

Co-hosted by the Department of Science and Innovation and the Science Diplomacy Capital for Africa initiative, the SFSA will take place from 6 to 8 December, with a focus on how science, technology and innovation (STI) can help to address challenges such as climate change, food security, health care and energy.

The forum will be held under the theme "Igniting conversations about science – People, partnerships and priorities for the Decadal Plan", and will bring together the scientific community, government, industry and civil society for discussions on the role of science in society.  With the many crises facing the world today, the interface between science and society has never been more important.

Over 2 500 delegates will participate in sessions about the future of society, innovation shaping the industry of tomorrow, and STI enabling inclusive and sustainable development, among other themes.

The programme will feature plenary lectures and sessions involving leading South African and international scientists, experts and thought leaders. There will also be an exhibition with key institutions and partners in the national system of innovation.
