All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Forum to be held in Cape Town
Governments, the research community and global Atlantic Ocean stakeholders will convene next week for a forum that will showcase the achievements and new initiatives of the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance (AAORIA). The forum is a platform to discuss the next steps for Atlantic Ocean research and find solutions for common challenges.
Co-hosted by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, the forum will take place in Cape Town from 21 to 22 November.
AAORIA is a science diplomacy effort involving countries from all sides of the Atlantic Ocean and aims to enhance marine research and innovation cooperation along and across the Atlantic Ocean.
The forum will take stock of the success and challenges of programmes and initiatives contributing to the implementation of the Galway and Belém Statements, and help to shape Atlantic Ocean research and innovation cooperation for the next decade in alignment with global commitments such as the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
The programme will feature sessions focusing on the All-Atlantic Blue Schools Network Initiative, the Ocean Sciences New Generation of Academics Programme and establishing an All-Atlantic plastic hub to work on microplastics, among others.
