International particle physics conference to be held in Cape Town
The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, will open the 6th Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics (TIPP) Conference, in a virtual address this afternoon (4 Sept). The conference is hosted by the iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator Based Sciences (iThemba LABS) in Cape Town from 4 to 8 September 2023.
IThemba LABS is the largest accelerator facility in the southern hemisphere.
The TIPP conferences are a series of science-driven cross-disciplinary conferences, which started in Tsukuba, Japan in 2009. The events attract leading physicists and engineers from around the world.
Sponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, the conference will include plenary and parallel tracks, with contributions outlining state-of-the-art developments in various areas. The programme focuses on all areas of detector development and instrumentation in particle physics, astroparticle physics and related fields.
Particle physics is a branch of physics that deals with the study of subatomic particles, which are the fundamental building blocks of matter and the forces that govern their interactions. It seeks to understand the nature of the universe at the smallest scale by investigating the properties and behaviours of these particles and the fundamental forces that mediate their interactions.
