National Science and Technology Forum-South 32 Awards celebrates silver jubilee

The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, will deliver the keynote address at the 25th NSTF-South32 Awards on 13 July 2023.

The National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

The NSTF Awards, sponsored by South32 and supported by the Department of Science and Innovation, are the most prestigious in the country for science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation.

This year's theme, linked to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), is "Ocean Science for Sustainable Development".

The gala event includes the recognition of young people who excelled in physical science and mathematics in the 2022 National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) examinations. Under the NSTF Brilliants Programme, now in its 22nd year, 26 students that enrolled for studies in SET-related courses at South African universities will also be recognised during the ceremony. This year the Department of Science and Innovation and the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions are sponsoring the programme.

All the finalists have made groundbreaking progress in business and industry (introducing new products or processes, for example), environmental sustainability, education, medicine or science in general.

The NSTF-South32 Awards encourage and reward excellence in scientific research, innovation, environmental sustainability/green economy, technology transfer, education and training, capacity building in research or engineering, SET management, and science communication and outreach.

The event will be held simultaneously in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and will also be livestreamed on the NSTF’s YouTube channel.
