Deputy President David Mabuza will visit the Biovac manufacturing facility in the Western Cape on Thursday, 18 March 2021. The visit, which will begin at 11:30, follows a similar visit to the institute's facility in Gauteng.

The purpose of the visit is to provide the Deputy President, Chairperson of the Interministerial Committee on COVID-19 Vaccines, with an opportunity to witness first-hand the country's scientific capabilities and biotechnology infrastructure, and the results of investments made to support vaccine manufacturing and development efforts.

The manufacturing facility in Cape Town performs product development, the formulation and filling of vaccines, packaging and labelling, as well as cold chain and distribution.

The visit will also serve as an opportunity to further explore the manufacturing of COVID-19 vaccines in South Africa.

A media pool arrangement will apply.

Enquiries about the pool arrangement: Gerzell Mathey at 072 276 3492

Enquiries about the visit: Matshepo Seedat at 082 679 9473 and Taslima Viljoen at 082 990 1685

Issued by the Presidency.
