2019 World IP Day looks at intellectual property and sports
The Department of Science and Technology will mark this year's World Intellectual Property (IP) Day at the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein, celebrating the international 2019 theme, Reach for Gold – IP and Sports.
This year's World IP Day campaign takes a closer look at how innovation, creativity and the IP rights that encourage and protect them support the development of sport and its enjoyment around the world.
Every April 26, World Intellectual Property Organization members celebrate World IP Day to distribute information about the role that IP rights (patents, trademarks, industrial designs and copyright) play in encouraging innovation and creativity.
Intellectual property is fundamental to South Africa's economic growth, and will be even more important as the country works to build an economy driven by knowledge and innovation. The country has spent the past decade building a robust environment in which businesses can use IP to create value from their technology, brands and content.
World IP Day is also aimed at promoting the protection of intellectual property and creating awareness about intellectual property rights.
The National Intellectual Property Management Office (a specialised service delivery unit of the DST), the Department of Trade and Industry, the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission, the Central University of Technology, the Free State Development Corporation, the Small Enterprise Development Agency, the Technology Innovation Agency and the Innovation Hub are collaborating to mark the day.
The main event on 26 April will feature Cheetahs player Oupa Mohoje, while several organisations will showcase their innovations as part of the World IP Day exhibition.
