The Free State is buzzing with excitement at the science activities taking place as part of National Science Week, which is being celebrated countrywide under the theme "Light and Light-based Technologies".

National Science Week is an annual celebration of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation led by the Department of Science and Technology. Various stakeholders, role players and interest groups conduct activities nationwide to promote the value of science and technology in people's daily lives.

This year's theme is in line with the United Nations declaration of 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies, which is aimed at raising awareness about the vital role that light and light science play in daily life – in medicine, job creation, communication and the entertainment industry, among others.

Hype has been created outside the National Museum in Bloemfontein where scientists are demonstrating how reptiles use sunlight to regulate body temperature, and how artificial lighting can be used in and outdoors.

At the local Mimosa Mall young scientists are giving quizzes on mathematics to the public.  This started on Monday and will go on until Friday.

At the University of the Free State, people can see how light is used in speed trap cameras, sonar machines, and many other daily applications.

Event details are as follows:

Friday, 7-9 Aug. – Goldfields Mall , Welkom –08:00- 17:00

Saturday, 8 Aug. – University of the Free State –12:00
