The National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) will hold a workshop in Pretoria on Friday, 15 May 2015, to launch its annual booklet on South African science, technology and innovation (STI) indicators, and to consult with stakeholders on the draft National Innovation Information Portal Framework.

Reliable, accurate and accessible data is useful to enable the assessment of how the National System of Innovation (NSI) is progressing, and how it is contributing to national development.

The STI indicators publication reports on key indicators that are useful in assessing the state of the NSI.  In developing this booklet, NACI draws on the 2002 National Research and Development Strategy, which specifically identified indicators as a basis for performance measurement.

Data in the 2014 booklet covers the 10 years from 2004 to 2013, which allows for a proper trend analysis over a period of time.

The indicators are grouped into the inputs and activities of the NSI (future research and development capacity, current research and development capacity, imported know-how and human capital development), outcomes driven by the NSI(technological progress and business performance), and the impact of these outcomes on the South Africa's economy and its citizens quality of life.

The National Innovation Information Portal Framework is intended to make use of developments in technology to collect and curate innovation-related data about the NSI in a central repository that can become a credible resource for policymakers, experts and other stakeholders.

Please note attendance is by invitation only.
