International Year of Chemistry 2011
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) have designated 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry (IYC).

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) have designated 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry (IYC).
The celebrations are being held under theme "Chemistry – our life, our future". Among other things, IYC 2011 aims to –
- increase public appreciation of how chemistry helps meet the world's needs;
- encourage an interest in chemistry among young people;
- generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry.
In March, as part of the IYC celebrations, at a Water Week event at Ratanga Junction (co-hosted with the Western Cape Education Department and the Cape Town City Council), the Department of Science and Technology gave Houtbay High School learners water-testing kits to generate an interest in chemistry.
Deputy Minister Hanekom addressed learners at the event, saying that they should develop an appreciation for water, as many people did not have access to clean water.
UNESCO and IUPAC aim to use IYC to communicate the achievements of and contributions made by chemistry, and a range of interactive, entertaining and educational activities will be offered for all ages. The International Year of Chemistry is intended to reach across the globe, with opportunities for public participation at local, regional, national and international level.
There are many ways in which individuals and organisations can be involved. If you are interested in taking part in an activity or event, or would like to propose an idea, visit www.chemistry2011.org and join in the discussions.
