Good afternoon and welcome.
It is a distinct honor and pleasure to welcome you to the CSIR on the occasion of the 9t****h S****cience Forum SA with a theme - Innovation and Science for Humanity.
Once more we converge in pursuit of a common goal - which is to engage in dialogue on the role of science, technology, innovation and collaboration in creating a positive impact on humanity.
At its core, science is more than just a pursuit of knowledge; it is a po****werful tool that has the potential to shape the future of humanity.
Through the lens of science, we answer the burning questions of our existence, and in doing so, discover ways to improve the quality of life for every person on this planet.
S****cience, when applied with wisdom and empathy, becomes a means for social, economic, and environmental progress that benefits not only the present but also generations to come.
Historically, science has been instrumental in solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
From the development of vaccines, which have saved countless lives from devastating diseases like polio, smallpox, and recently, COVID-19.
T****o breakthroughs in agriculture that have fed billions of people, ensuring that more of the world’s population is able to live with food security.
the technological advancements that have connected us in ways that were unimaginable just a few decades ago, shrinking distances and bringing humanity closer together.
To the creation of th****riving economies
However, the true po****wer of science lies not just in innovation but in its application to the needs of society.
Today, as we stand at the crossroads of unprecedented challenges—climate change, inequality, conflict, and the rapid advance of artificial intelligence—we must ask ourselves how we can harness the power of science to create solutions that are inclusive, sustainable, and equitable.
The theme of this years Science Forum - Science for humanity means we must use our discoveries to address the issues that matter most to all of us: improving health, ensuring access to food, water and education, protecting the environment, promoting peace as well as developing and growing our economies.
It is about b****uilding bridges, not just between countries, but between disciplines, cultures, and generations.
It is about fostering dialogue and collaboration among scientists, policymakers, business leaders, and citizens to ensure that the benefits of scientific progress are shared equally across the globe.
Let us also acknowledge that science is not without its ethical responsibilities.
Every breakthrough brings with it the need for thoughtful reflection.
From the ethical considerations surrounding artificial intelligence to the environmental impact of new technologies, we must ensure that our pursuit of knowledge is aligned with the greater good.
The responsibility of the scientist is not only to innovate but to be a st****eward of the world, creating solutions that are s****ustainable, humane, and just.
In this new era, science has the power to transcend borders and unite humanity in ways never before possible. The solutions to our collective challenges—climate crisis, disease, poverty, and social inequality—will not come from a single nation or individual.
They will come from o****ur shared commitment to advancing knowledge, applying it thoughtfully, and ensuring that every human being has the opportunity to benefit from it.
To achieve this, we must foster a global culture of science—one that emphasizes collaboration, ethical responsibility, and inclusivity.
We must ensure that the benefits of scientific progress reach every corner of the world, from the cities to the most remote villages, from the wealthiest to the most impoverished communities.
As I conclude I would to remind us that science is not just a field of study; it is a universal language that, when s****poken with compassion and integrity, can lift humanity to new heights – truly living up to the theme of this forum – S****cience for Humanity.
I would like to congratulate the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation for what is promising to be an engaging science forum.
