Deputy Minister Gina to award SA outstanding grassroots innovators

The Deputy Minister of Science Technology and Innovation, Ms Nomalungelo Gina, will deliver the keynote address at the 2nd Grassroots Innovation Awards ceremony, in Pretoria on Thursday, 05 December.

Taking place alongside the 2024 Science Forum South Africa at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria, the Grassroots Innovation Awards are an initiative of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and its entity, the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA).

Implemented by TIA through the Grassroots Innovation Programme (GIP), the awards celebrate grassroots innovators whose technologies have socio-economic development impact and can lead to job creation.

The GIP is aimed at supporting and commercialising local innovations from ordinary citizens who are individual with ideas to solve local challenges using local resources and own capabilities outside the realm of formal innovation institutions.

The awards categories are:

  • Outstanding Youth Grassroots Innovator
  • Outstanding Women Grassroots Innovator
  • Disability Innovation Award
  • Social Impact Award
  • Innovator in the market generating revenue Award.
  • Sales beyond SA borders with export potential Award
  • Best Innovation by Sector Award
  • Innovation of the Year Award
