Minister Blade Nzimande to open Science Forum South Africa 2024

The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) invites media to the official opening of Science Forum South Africa (SFSA) 2024, which will take place from 4 to 6 December at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande, will open the forum by reflecting on 30 years of democracy in South Africa and the country's aspirations for the future.

The SFSA is an annual event intended to promote a vibrant debate on the role of science, technology and innovation (STI) in society. This year, it is co-hosted with the Science Diplomacy Capital for Africa initiative, which promotes science collaboration across Africa and beyond.  Its 2024 theme is "Igniting Conversations about Science – Innovation and Science for Humanity".

Examining the diaspora's role in supporting African STI, a dialogue on technology, democracy and the evolving digital landscape will be among the topics of discussion.

The forum will also address important thematic tracks, such as getting youth into science in Africa, and innovation for future industries.  As South Africa prepares for the G20 presidency in 2025, SFSA 2024 will focus on forging partnerships through the G20 to promote sustainable development in Africa.

A special highlight of the forum's closing ceremony will be Minister Nzimande's presentation of the Science Diplomacy Award, which recognises partnerships that advance STI in Africa.

SFSA 2024 will feature over 80 exhibitors from leading local and international organisations, showcasing innovations in health, environment, digital technology and more. With 300 proposals received, attendees can expect an inspiring showcase of solutions aimed at societal advancement.

Members of the media are requested to pre-register to get admission to the event by filling out the online form at https://www.sfsa.co.za/registration/.
