Launch of study on peaceful uses of nuclear technologies

The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) will receive a research, development and innovation (RDI) study report on the peaceful uses of nuclear technologies in South Africa on Tuesday, 5 December in Pretoria.

Commissioned by the DSI, the consensus study will support an agreement between South Africa and the International Atomic Energy Agency by providing a solid foundation to draft the country's national RDI strategic framework on the uses of nuclear technologies.

The study will also highlight nuclear technology's applications in fields such as medicine, space exploration, water desalination, agriculture and reliable clean energy.

The chairperson of the study panel, Prof. Mike Sathekge, will present the outcomes of the study to DSI Director-General, Dr Phil Mjwara.  This will be followed by a workshop in which numerous stakeholders will participate in a panel discussion on the implementation of the study's recommendations.

The consensus study was administered by the South African National Energy Development Institute, and the Academy of Science of South Africa undertook the evaluation of RDI nuclear technologies uses.
