The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, will be addressing the Artisan graduation ceremony for The Centres of Specialisation.
Ministry of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) declared the year 2014-2024 as the “Decade of the Artisan”.
The Decade of the Artisan came into existence as result of lack of qualified artisans in the country to sustain industries and support economic growth, which prompted the department of Higher Education and Training to identify artisan training as a priority area for skills development.
As a result, the Department initiated the Centres of Specialisation (CoS) programme and implemented it as a pilot project, with planned intake from the 2019, 2021 and 2022 academic years. Due to the Centres of Specialisation (CoS) programme demand, it has been mainstreamed as a model to implement occupational programmes at TVET colleges.
The popularity of the CoS project have resulted on 34 CoS centres accredited for training and 35 as Trade Test Centres by Quality Council for Trades and Occupations at 21 TVET colleges.
The Department of Higher Education and Training will be hosting a series of events of the Decade of the Artisan ( 2022 to 2024) that will promote artisanal identity and status at TVET Colleges.
These events will ensure that the TVET sector image is also promoted as the institutions of choice for artisan training building on the image and status of Centres of Specialisation.
During the graduation ceremony Minister Nzimande will be joined by participating TVET colleges, Organised Employers, Organised Labour, Government Departments and Donor Organisations that participate in skills development.
