National Science Week 2022; celebrating role of basic sciences in society

National Science Week (NSW) is back again as a live event, after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Taking place from 1-6 August 2022, the public can once again enjoy various activities focussing on science, technology and innovation.

The annual science engagement initiative is led by the Department of Science and Innovation and the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA). It attracts thousands of learners and the public to workshops, science shows and lectures at universities, schools, science centres and public facilities across the country.

The NSW is a mass participation initiative within the context of the Science Engagement Strategy and its objectives are the following: to popularise science to the broader SA society; to serve as a vehicle for showcasing local innovations in science and technology, and the leadership role of the DST and other government departments in enabling research, development and innovation; to make Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Innovation (STEMI) appealing to learners, such that they consider STEMI as preferable career options, and to familiarise targeted participants with the science linked to areas in which South Africa has knowledge and/or geographic advantage so as to contribute in making them informed and critically engaged citizens.

Themed, "Celebrating the role of basic sciences in the modern world", the hybrid launch event will take place at the Umlazi Campus of Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), on Saturday, 30 July.

Over 100 exhibitions, talks and workshops will be lined up at the launch event, to demonstrate how basic sciences pave the way for the discoveries and technological revolutions that continuously reshape the world in which we live.
